Who likes to be SAD?

SAD
The holidays are over and now we have 3-4 more months of winter to look forward to. During this time most of us will be hit by SAD in one way or another. We all know that with the short days and lack of sunshine, the cold, and being cooped up all day long, winter can be a downer. We feel stuck or literally stagnated and when this happens, our liver qi often gets stagnated as well. Symptoms of liver qi stagnation are depression, anxiety, frustration, and anger.

One of the most beautiful things about Chinese medicine is that is great for moving qi. We might be literally stuck inside, but it is important to keep qi moving to keep us feeling happy. Along with upping your dose of vitamin d and staying active – indoors or out, Chinese medicine can help you avoid those winter blues.

I also strongly recommend getting involved in a group activity at the gym, or taking a new class such as yoga, taichi, or qigong. These activities help settle the mind, harmonize the body and connect you and your body. For those of you who say you just don't feel grounded – these are very grounding activities and doing them almost always lift your mood.

Acupressure can help when you can't make it in. Hegu, or LI4 is a very strong point that moves qi all over the body. It is so strong that it is in almost every single point prescription there is. This is a very strong point, so this point is always contraindicated in pregnancy – do not use this point if you are pregnant. Hegu is located about halfway along the index metacarpal bone, next to the bone. Press this point till you feel a soreness or qi sensation. You can press this point for a minute or throughout the day or when you are feeling down.

There is also a point on the very top of your head nicknamed "The happy point" that you can press that will help lift energy and lift mood. If you press it, it feels slightly tender. Doing this a few times a day can give you a mood boost, but acupuncture and or the use of herbs will help you feeling altogether balanced.

Some foods that you can incorporate into your diet that also helps move qi are:

• Basil
• Cardamom
• Carrots
• Cayenne
• Chives
• Dill Seeds
• Fennel
• Garlic
• Grapefruit
• Orange Peels ( you can make a tea from zest )
• Peaches
• Peppermint
• Plum radish
• Squash
• Tangerine Peels
• Turmeric
• Vinegar
• Watercress
• Onions
• Mint
• Asparagus
• Black pepper
• Leafy greens, sprouts, beets

Be proactive and stay on top of feeling good before you end up in the dumps trying to dig yourself out.
