Put down those melon balls!

Spring is almost here! The snow is melting revealing the dormant grass that lay beneath it. After this winter, brown grass never looked so good. But with spring comes spring allergies. For allergy sufferers, the end of winter and the start of spring isn't necessarily a time to look forward to. But, if you treat yourself right you can greatly reduce your symptoms and actually enjoy this time of year!

I always say it, food is medicine! What you eat affects you in some way. By avoiding certain foods, you can greatly reduce your symptoms. In an earlier blog, I mentioned a list of foods and I want to bring them up again. I think this is a good list:

If you're allergic to tree pollen, avoid:

Almonds, apples, carrots, cherries, hazelnuts, peaches, pears, plums.

If you're allergic to grass, avoid:

Melons, oranges, tomatoes.

If you're allergic to any seasonal allergies, avoid:

Beer, liquor, wine ( all three contain a histamine)

These foods have similar antigen responses in our body to those as the specific allergens like ragweed, tree pollen or grass. For example, chamomile and echinacea are close cousins to ragweed, so by consuming these things we can exasperate allergies. It is better to build up your body to prevent allergies in the first place so you can still enjoy these yummy foods and the outdoors, but avoiding triggers definitely helps!
